Transporting modern large-sized families is not an easy task. In most situations where you need more than just a reliable minivan, a full-size SUV will do the job seamlessly.
This segment of high-class full-size SUVs is very competitive, and choosing which one to lease in 2022 could pose a bit of a problem as you are faced with many attractive options from countless automakers.
We would be comparing the Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition, two of some of the highly-rated SUVs in this segment. This comparison is to help you make a more informed choice when leasing.
What’s new
For the 2022 model year, the Chevrolet Suburban gets a host of exciting updates across its trims. The red-hot 420-hp 6.2Liter V-8 engine, which was previously offered in the top-tier High country trim only, is now available in the RST, Z71, and Premier trims. All other trims, excluding the base LS trim, get an upgraded infotainment system and a customizable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The newly enhanced infotainment system now boasts modern Google features such as an app store, maps, and a voice assistant. More safety features are now standard across the Suburban’s lineup, including parking sensors, auto high-beams, lane-keeping assist, and General Motor’s Buckle to Drive feature, plus many more high-tech features.
The Ford Expedition is not shy of updates for the 2022 model year either. It witnesses an exterior and interior revamp and some newly added features and options. The grilles and bumpers have all been restyled for 2022, and a new gigantic 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display now replaces the 8.0-inch display previously offered. You can also opt for an even larger vertical 15.5-inch display if you wish.
A new Timberline trim has been added to the Ute’s lineup, and it features 33-inch all-terrain tires, a raised ride height, and a more aggressive look.
Ford now offers its BlueCruise hands-free highway driving tech on the range-topping Platinum trim. To crown it all up, Ford introduces the stealth package, a performance package that features a sporty design, performance-tuned suspensions, and an enhanced version of the twin-turbo V-6 engine.
Engine And Transmission
The Chevy Suburban offers three engine options; a pair of capable V-8s and one diesel-powered six-cylinder engine. Irrespective of what’s beneath the hood of your Suburban, a 10-speed automatic transmission is standard. The base engine is a 5.3Liter V-8 that generates 355-hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Higher models of the Suburban are motivated by the more powerful 6.2Liter V-8 that puts out 420-horses and 460 lb-ft of torque. You can also choose to equip your Suburban with a torquey 3.0Liter six-cylinder turbodiesel engine that makes 277-hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but you can opt for all-wheel drive if you want to take your Suburban off the road.
The Ford Expedition comes with a potent 3.5Liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that can be tuned to deliver more horses in higher models of the SUV. The standard version of this twin-turbo engine delivers 380-hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The tuned version generates 20 extra horses and 480 lb-ft of torque. Acquiring the stealth performance package gives you a more powerful version of this twin-turbo V-6 that puts out 440-hp and 510 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but there’s an optional all-wheel drive.
Handling And Performance
When it comes to handling, most drivers would rather stick with the playful Suburban. Despite its size, the Suburban gives off the agility of a sedan. The steering is very responsive, and its nimble chassis is a joy to behold. It has a towing capacity of 8300 lbs. When fitted with adaptive dampers and adjusted air suspension, the Suburban delivers up to 10.0-inches of ground clearance. If you are particular about handling, then leasing the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is your best move.
The Ford Expedition, on the other hand, turns out to be less agile than the Suburban, and its steering response is also not as precise as that of the Suburban. But it tows 9200 lbs, about a thousand more than its opponent, and when properly equipped, it delivers up to 10.6-inches of ground clearance. If you would be doing a lot of towing with your full-size SUV, leasing the 2022 Ford Expedition is a great idea, given its higher towing capacity.
In terms of performance, the Ford Expedition crosses the 0-60mph mark faster than the Suburban. Expedition models with the standard 380hp engine race from 0-60mph in 6.2seconds, while those with the 400-hp boosted version do the same in 5.8seconds. The Stealth performance engine is obviously the quickest, though we are yet to test it.
Meanwhile, the fastest Suburban is the one with the 420-hp engine. It sprints from 0-60mph in 6.1seconds. Second is the turbodiesel at 6.8seconds, and lastly, the base 355-hp V-8 at 7.2seconds.
Fuel Economy
The most fuel-efficient of all available powertrains is the diesel-powered Suburban. It gets an EPA rating of 21-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway. The other Suburban models see their EPA ratings hover around 15-mpg and 20-mpg in the city and highway, respectively. The Base Expedition gets a rating of 17/23 mpg in the city and highway, respectively, and this number reduces as we go towards the enhanced engines.
Interior
These two all-American SUVs are spacious, with impressive passenger and cargo room. The Suburban, however, is a bit more spacious than the Expedition, though the latter accords more cubby storage space.
The interior of the Suburban is neatly styled with quality materials, and it gets a lot more luxurious as you climb up the trim. It features a larger head-up display, a 12.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple Carplay, and Android Auto integration. Heated and ventilated seats and steering wheel, along with rear-seat entertainment, are optional.
The interior of the Expedition is outfitted with high-tech and upscale materials. Top trims feature Premium quality leather upholstery, massaging seats, and rear-seat entertainment. There’s a 12.0inch infotainment display, but you can decide to take things up a notch with the gigantic 15.5-inch vertical touchscreen display.
If you are looking for a full-size hauler that offers space, luxury, spirited performance, and comfort, the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition easily fit your description.
